Every Sip Is a Decadent Celebration

Oremus, the Hungarian estate of the legendary Vega Sicilia—widely regarded as Spain’s greatest winery—produces Tokaji wines that are pure luxury epitomized—and 2008 was among the best vintages in the region’s long, regal history.

One of the world’s finest and rarest sweet wines, boasting a legacy that dates back to 1630, Oremus’ 2008 Aszú 6 Puttonyos is a prized acquisition for any cellar.

This Tokaji belongs to that revered clique of wines that can only be made when nature permits botrytis, aka “noble rot,” to work its magic on sugar-swollen grapes. The botrytis dehydrates the grapes and concentrates the flavors, laying the groundwork for a luscious elixir that’s known to inspire obsession.

The Tokaji region enjoys long, sun-filled summers, and in great vintages, a marvelously dry fall. Tack on the river mists that shroud the vines on summer mornings and encourage the development of botrytis, and this prized swath of vines possesses the ideal conditions for creating breathtaking moelleux that have mesmerized generations of royal-court members and kings.

When Vega Sicilia acquired the property, they discovered a hand-carved underground labyrinth that descends for miles and dates to the 12th century. Here, where candelabras hang from ceilings and a special mold on the walls regulates the humidity, the magical 2008 Aszú 6 Puttonyos—made according to traditions honed over 400 years—has been lying in wait. The “6” in the wine’s name refers to the six baskets of botrytis-affected grapes (puttonyos) added to the must.

Following maceration, gentle pressing, and a fermentation of up to two months, the wine ages in oak barrels. After additional time spent in bottle, this Tokaji has become a priceless treasure.
