HEATHROW AIRPORT

With over 76 million passengers in transit per year Heathrow Airport is London's main hub and one of the busiest in the world. This airport serves over 170 destinations located in 90 different countries. Heathrow is the primary hub for British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and has 5 different terminals which are connected by shuttle buses and trains.

HISTORY:
Heathrow airport was used for military purposes and, once World War II ended it was officially opened to civil aviation flights (31st May 1946). When in 1969 Terminal 1 was opened over 5 million passengers were transiting through the airport. Over the years passenger traffic increased and new terminals were opened.

CONNECTIONS FROM AND TO HEATHROW AIRPORT:
Heathrow Airport is located about 23km west of London.

Train from Heathrow Airport to London:
The Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get to Central London. The journey time to Paddington Station is approximately 30 minutes. Trains run every day from 05:10am to 23:35pm approximately every 15 minutes,.
The ticket price is £18.

Underground from Heathrow Airport to London:
The underground train is the cheapest option to get to Central London from Heathrow Airport. The Piccadilly line (“blue-line”) has three Tube stations at Heathrow Airport.
The journey takes around 60 minutes (Zone 1) and you can buy tickets from ticket machines at any tube station. A single journey between Heathrow Airport and Central London (Zone 1) costs £6, you can also buy a 24 hour Travelcard valid for unlimited use of the public transportation (Zone 1-6).

o Terminal 2 & 3: the first train departure is at 05:12am (at 03:10am on the weekends) and the last train at 11:45pm (Fri-Sat at 03:07am, on Sunday at 11:28pm)
o Terminal 4: the first train leaves at 05:02am (On Sunday at 05:47am) and the last at 11:35pm (On Sunday at 11:15pm)
o Terminal 5: the first leaves at 05:23am (at 03:14am on the weekends) and the last at 11:42pm (Fri-Sat at 03:04am, on Sunday at 11:25pm)
A 24-hour service runs on London Underground lines on Friday and Saturday with trains to / from terminals 2,3,5, every 10 minutes.

Bus from Heathrow Airport to London:
Buses are an economic solution and connect Heathrow to London Victoria coach station, which is a strategic railway junction allowing access to 3 metro lines (Circle line, District line, Victoria line).
This shuttle bus service is operated by National Express and is available at all Heathrow airport terminals. The journey takes around 90 minutes and the ticket price varies between £6 and £10.
The bus station is located above Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 tube station.
There is also a local bus network that provides bus that depart from Heathrow to reach towns in west London. Ticket prices depend on availability. It is not possible to pay cash on London buses, you can use Oyster and Visitor cards, Contactless and Travelcard.
Kids aged 5-10 and students have free and discounted travel.
Bus route n°285 connects the airport to Feltham station, where trains to London Waterloo Station leave every 10 minutes. The journey takes about an hour and 40 minutes. You can buy a combined bus + train ticket.
There is also a bus service that connects Heathrow terminals with a large number of hotels near the airport.

Taxi from Heathrow Airport to London:
If you travel in groups of more people, taxi can be a viable alternative. You can find London's famous black taxis outside each Heathrow terminal. They can also be booked online. The taxi fare to/from Heathrow airport depends on the traffic and the distance traveled (40-60 minutes). The cost of a single journey varies between £48 and £90.
There is an extra charge of £2.80 for journeys that start from Heathrow Airport or if the taxi is booked by phone. There is no extra change for baggage and all taxis have wheelchair access.

Connections from Heathrow to Gatwick:
If you need to travel between Heathrow and Gatwick airports, here are some options:
• By bus and coach:
o National Express: non-stop services between Heathrow and Gatwick. The journey takes around 75 minutes and the ticket costs £25.
o Megabus: departure every hour, it takes around 45 minutes.

SECURITY CONTROLS:
There are strict security regulations in every airport in UK. Before leaving for the airport is important to understand the restrictions and what carry-on baggage you may bring.
In the security checks, you will be asked to show your boarding pass and placing your personal items, coat/jacket, electronic devices into a tray.
Any liquids (including creams, gels, etc.) must be in containers of no more than 100 ml each and then placed inside a clear resealable plastic bag separately from your bag.
When you travel internationally, you need a passport and visa to board an international flight and to enter the country.
