About Hydromol Cream

Hydromol Cream is an emollient, designed to treat dry skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

In dry skin conditions, your skin stops producing certain oils. These oils normally form a protective layer over your skin, keeping out irritants and helping to keep skin moisturised.

Hydromol creates a protective layer over the skin. This layer helps to seal in moisture, allowing skin to be revitalised while also protecting delicate skin from further irritation. Hydromol Cream uses Sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate, a natural moisturiser, to help keep skin hydrated.

Practical Tips

Dry skin conditions can be difficult to deal with. Follow these quick tips to help make sure your skin is as protected as possible.

Change your environment - dry air can lead to dry skin. A humidifier can help to keep the air from drying out. Be sure to avoid cold air where possible. This can mean staying indoors on particularly cold days, or keeping your skin covered if you do need to head out.
Use a gentle cleanser - many soaps can contain ingredients that cause skin irritation. Avoid soaps containing sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), as this is well known to cause irritation in sensitive skin. Fragrance-free and colouring-free products are often good for sensitive skin types.
Use a soap substitute - in many cases, any sort of soap can be enough to trigger a skin reaction. Some emollient therapy creams, such as Hydromol, can be used as a soap substitute, cleansing the skin while increasing the water content of the skin and preventing hands drying out. Most bath emollients can also be used as soap substitutes.
Avoid hot water - where possible, use warm water rather than hot. Hot water can strip the upper layer of oil from your skin, and can cause irritation to already delicate skin.
Avoid the sun - sun exposure and tanning can both cause further skin irritation. While some forms of UV treatment can be helpful to some skin conditions (such as psoriasis), this should be performed by a trained professional to avoid overexposure and further skin damage.

FAQ

How does Unguentum M Cream work?

Your skin produces sebaceous oils. These oils gather on the skin’s surface, allowing them to form a protective layer. In cases where a skin condition disrupts this layer of oil, the skin can dry out. This can lead to itching, flaking and even infection as the skin cracks.

Hydromol replaces this oil layer. This thin layer helps dry skin by retaining moisture, keeping skin soft and allowing it time to heal from dry skin conditions. This extra moisture leaves skin feeling smooth and softened.

Can washing my hands cause dry skin?

Your skin creates its own barrier layer - a combination of natural oils secreted by your skin. Washing your hands can strip this layer away, and lead to dry, chapped skin. Barrier creams and ointments like Hydromol, applied directly after washing your hands, can help to reinstate the skin’s protective barrier, and prevent skin from losing moisture.

What causes psoriasis?

Psoriasis is caused by an autoimmune reaction; your immune system reacting to your body’s own tissues like they were a foreign substance. In psoriasis, this reaction occurs towards the skin cells, which make them replicate at a much faster rate than normal. This creates large, raised red “plaques”, with a distinctive silvery scale caused by layers of skin cells sloughing from the skin’s surface.
