Introducing online betting

The idea of betting on sports has been around for many years. Football is the most popular game in the world and in recent decades it has also become the number one choice for sports bettors. No matter what your style of betting, soccer offers you the chance to make a profit, with dozens of matches playing every day all over the world and a bewildering array of markets in which to bet. Even the most successful sports betting enthusiasts need to brush up their skills from time to time and, for the rest of us, it also helps to be reminded of the essentials. So here you can learn more about betting strategies.

Odds and probabilities

Understand how to read and calculate odds and probabilities is obviously requirement number one for any bettor. When it comes to soccer betting, you may encounter decimal, fractional or US odds, depending on your preference and which particular market you are betting in, but they all just different ways of expressing the same probability or percentage. For example, fractional odds of 2/1 and decimal odds of 3.0 both represent a 33.33% chance or a probability of .33. For the successful sports bettor, switching between different forms of odds, percentages and probabilities becomes second nature.

Different types of wager you can place

With Mr Green, you have the opportunity to place wagers on a wide variety of different bet types on the various sports we offer. Let’s take a closer look at the types of bets we offer and how you can use these wagers to suit your own personal betting strategy.

Moneyline wagers/Win bets

The classic win bet is one of the most popular types of sports bet. Win bets are usually offered as 2-way bets for sports which don’t allow draws such as tennis and basketball. There are also 3-way bets when a draw is included in sports such as football, which means that you can either bet on a home win, an away win or a draw.

Handicap bets

Handicap bets are particularly popular when there is a clear favourite in the match. In handicap bets, the favourites are given an imaginary deficit or handicap, for example, minus two goals, which is then subtracted from the actual result. A handicap bet allows you to turn low odds on a favourite into higher odds.

Point spread bets

Point spread bets involve betting on how many points a team will win or lose by. For example, Team A may be given a point spread of -7, which means they must win the game by at least eight points to cover the spread. Conversely, if Team B has a point spread of +7, this is added to their actual points total.

Over/under bets

Over/under bets are also very popular and are offered on almost all sports. You can bet on whether there will be under or over 2.5 goals in a game. Over/under bets are often specified with half points to avoid misunderstandings. When considering over/under bets, your betting strategy should certainly include researching statistics and form.

Prop bets

Prop bets are side bets, which are offered in addition to the main betting markets and do not directly affect the final outcome of a game. Types of prop bets include betting on which team will score the next goal or which player will receive the first yellow card. You can usually combine these prop bets with other types of bets.

Future/outright wagers

Future bets, also known as outright wagers, placed on the winner of a championship or a tournament such as the World Cup, are one of the most popular types of bet. You can also place bets on other long-term events such as top scorer bets or bet on the best player in a tournament.

Multiple/parlays/accumulators

Multiple bets, also known as accumulators, allow you to combine several different bets in a single bet and achieve high odds. An example of an accumulator would be combining three different teams to win their matches or five games in which you think there will be over 2.5 goals. Please note that a maximum of 12 outcomes can be added to the betslip.

multi betting

Multi betting

At one time some bookmakers only allowed bettors to back the outcome of multiple football matches and not single games. Those days are over, but the multiple bet, in which the profit from the first bet is staked on the second bet and so on, still have a place in the sports bettors armoury. In fact, a multiple bet is your quickest way to turn a small stake into a big win, so its ideal if your betting bank is small. The downside of multiple betting is that the combined odds of winning are often long and don’t always represent value, but as long as you understand the risks involved, a multiple bet is often a good option.

live betting

Live betting

At one time, bookmakers would only take bets before a match had kicked off, but in recent years, the concept of live betting or betting-in-play as it is sometimes known has really taken off and now all good bookmakers offer live betting markets. Betting in-play is one of the most exciting ways to bet, and successful in-play bettors will closely follow the live match, responding rapidly to changing events and to fluctuating prices. Quick-thinking and clear decision making are the hallmarks of the successful live betting punter.

practical advice

Practical advice

Bookmaking may have changed beyond all recognition in recent years, but some things remain the same, and there are certain golden rules that the soccer bettor abandons at their peril. Win, lose or draw, you should always keep a note of your bets, to build up a record that will help you to analyse your own strengths and weaknesses. A level staking plan is the best way to go about your betting, reducing risk and ensuring consistency, and then there is, perhaps the most important golden rule of all: never bet what you cannot afford to lose.
