Cove View is nestled in the hillside, overlooking Porthallow. This is old Cornwall, quiet Cornwall, a very tranquil setting on old Pengarrock Farm that goes back to the 1200s. This attractive cottage, one of three converted barns, is all on one level, keeps traditional features like exposed beams and stonework, slate floors as well as a wood burner for those chilly evenings There’s a cosy living room with flatscreen TV, a traditional kitchen, a comfortable bedroom and a modern shower room. Outside there’s a private garden with views of the countryside down to Porthallow Cove, mid point on the South-West Coastal Path with miles of beautiful cliffside walks.
Porthallow, meaning ‘Port at the end of the Moor’, is a small, tucked-away village on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula. It was once a busy pilchard fishing port– in fact, the old pilchard cellars can still be seen near the pebbly beach. Visit the Five Pilchards Inn, full of nautical memorabilia, just off the beach. A mile offshore is the Manacles Reef, a rocky outcrop, and the cause of countless historical shipwrecks. It’s a popular site for diving, accessed from the neighbouring Porthkerris Cove, where you can hire the gear, or book a boat trip to snorkel with the basking sharks. Nearby St Keverne has a handful of shops, two inns and a cluster of whitewashed cottages, all huddled around the village square, and overlooked by the impressive 15th Century church, St Akervnus.

We booked a table here on 4th July, the 1st day the pub had been open after lockdown. We received a friendly welcome and although it was a reduced menu there was a good choice. I enjoyed a bowl of local mussels which were delicious. We returned for another meal a different evening later in the week. The standard of food was excellent and presentation also. Would be a great place for overnight stay.

Porthallow Beach

A small sheltered pebble beach with lovely views where fishermen used to launch their boats in their hundreds. Today there are still a few working fishing boats pulled up on the shore and the unspoilt village has a popular pub, aptly named The Five Pilchards. Car parking literally on the beach so not far to carry all the kit, lots of rockpools exposed at low tide and great snorkeling just offshore.

Godrevy Cove & Leggan Cove

Godrevy Cove is a lovely sandy beach over 300m in length and unlike other beaches in the area, there is still plenty of sand at high water. Access is via the Coast Path but it’s not a difficult walk, only about 500m from the hamlet of Rosenithon where you can leave the car on the road. There’s good swimming and snorkelling here, as well as rock pools at low tide and the beach is never crowded. You can also access next door Leggan Cove across the foreshore at low water, a similar but smaller and more sheltered beach.
Bosahan Cove

This is a real gem but quite tricky to access, so it’s not for everyone. Almost hidden on the southern banks of the Helford River, this idyllic sand and shingle cove is surrounded by thick woodland and is a fantastic spot to swim or sunbathe, often without another soul in sight. To get there either cut through the gardens of the Bosahan estate (summer months only, admission charges apply), bring a small boat or walk about a mile along the coast path from Helford Village. No amenities due to its location, dogs allowed all year round.
Coverack Cove

A pretty fishing village with a large sandy beach ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and popular with windsurfers and sailors. The pretty harbour has a few cafes, shops and toilets and the beach is easily accessible from a small car park on the edge of the village . Dogs welcome all year.

Grebe Beach

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.
This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.

Steep walk from beach and not much there anyway. Lane was covered in deep red soil after deluge and single track a bit scary.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I'm sorry the location of Cove View wasn't to your liking. I think the heavy rain brought the soil down from the fields which does happen in Cornwall from time to time. The quiet location is the attraction for ost guests, but I do appreciate that it wasn't right for you.

Simply wonderful. We had a fabulous holiday at Cove View what a delightful spot. Wonderfully positioned for various outings-not far to drive to the ‘Shipwrights Arms’ overlooking the Helford river or take the ferry further on to the ‘ferry boat’ both serving excellent food. Spotlessly clean, and the friendly owners gave some we excellent advice on walks with our dogs. Small point but maybe useful to some - the local pub in the cove is up for sale, is open for drinks and offering snacks only. We would certainly return.

Quite a few hanging cobwebs which could easily be removed with long handled brush. Minor point and didn't bother us but alot of people are more picky than us.

A bit of high level cobweb removal required but generally great. Contact Numbers - It would be useful to have the Cornwall office number on the paperwork and a mobile contact number in case of a power cut or emergency (as we experienced). There were no candles or matches. Fortunately it was resolved after a couple of hours.

The mattress on the double bed is not very comfortable. We would love to return again and are waiting to hear from you if the owners are still going to be renting out the accommodation next year as I did try and book it in June this year from a week in April 2022. We absolutely loved our stay at Cove View and will most certainly return. The setting was fabulous & so, so peaceful. Very much appreciated the garden & the 'cove view'. Beautiful interior & everything inside was spotless. Great to walk down to The Five Pilchards & the beach, which had only a small number of people on it, although it was half-term. So easy to get to amazing places during the day - no need at all to travel far. We thought Cove View was perfect & so did our little dog!

We were delighted with this property it had everything we needed for a very enjoyable stay. We especially liked the garden and the secret gate that takes you to St Nectan's Glen. We walked there twice..in many ways a preferred the walk there and back along the river. Beautiful. We had a take away Sunday lunch from Boscastle Farm Shop which was delicious and they provided a gluten free option. Nothing was to much trouble. Would highly recommend

David went out of his way to help us when we needed a to find a garage as the car starter motor failed ......And while the car was being repaired for a few days he kindly took us to St Keverne to shop for food . He then took my husband to the garage when the car was repaired to collect it . A very kind gentleman. Very tranquil place . The second time we had stayed this year and hopefully staying there again in 2020!

Steep walk from beach and not much there anyway. Lane was covered in deep red soil after deluge and single track a bit scary.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I'm sorry the location of Cove View wasn't to your liking. I think the heavy rain brought the soil down from the fields which does happen in Cornwall from time to time. The quiet location is the attraction for ost guests, but I do appreciate that it wasn't right for you.

Simply wonderful. We had a fabulous holiday at Cove View what a delightful spot. Wonderfully positioned for various outings-not far to drive to the ‘Shipwrights Arms’ overlooking the Helford river or take the ferry further on to the ‘ferry boat’ both serving excellent food. Spotlessly clean, and the friendly owners gave some we excellent advice on walks with our dogs. Small point but maybe useful to some - the local pub in the cove is up for sale, is open for drinks and offering snacks only. We would certainly return.

Contact Numbers - It would be useful to have the Cornwall office number on the paperwork and a mobile contact number in case of a power cut or emergency (as we experienced). There were no candles or matches. Fortunately it was resolved after a couple of hours.

We absolutely loved our stay at Cove View and will most certainly return. The setting was fabulous & so, so peaceful. Very much appreciated the garden & the 'cove view'. Beautiful interior & everything inside was spotless. Great to walk down to The Five Pilchards & the beach, which had only a small number of people on it, although it was half-term. So easy to get to amazing places during the day - no need at all to travel far. We thought Cove View was perfect & so did our little dog!

We were delighted with this property it had everything we needed for a very enjoyable stay. We especially liked the garden and the secret gate that takes you to St Nectan's Glen. We walked there twice..in many ways a preferred the walk there and back along the river. Beautiful. We had a take away Sunday lunch from Boscastle Farm Shop which was delicious and they provided a gluten free option. Nothing was to much trouble. Would highly recommend

David went out of his way to help us when we needed a to find a garage as the car starter motor failed ......And while the car was being repaired for a few days he kindly took us to St Keverne to shop for food . He then took my husband to the garage when the car was repaired to collect it . A very kind gentleman. Very tranquil place . The second time we had stayed this year and hopefully staying there again in 2020!

We booked a table here on 4th July, the 1st day the pub had been open after lockdown. We received a friendly welcome and although it was a reduced menu there was a good choice. I enjoyed a bowl of local mussels which were delicious. We returned for another meal a different evening later in the week. The standard of food was excellent and presentation also. Would be a great place for overnight stay.

A small sheltered pebble beach with lovely views where fishermen used to launch their boats in their hundreds. Today there are still a few working fishing boats pulled up on the shore and the unspoilt village has a popular pub, aptly named The Five Pilchards. Car parking literally on the beach so not far to carry all the kit, lots of rockpools exposed at low tide and great snorkeling just offshore.

Godrevy Cove & Leggan Cove

Godrevy Cove is a lovely sandy beach over 300m in length and unlike other beaches in the area, there is still plenty of sand at high water. Access is via the Coast Path but it’s not a difficult walk, only about 500m from the hamlet of Rosenithon where you can leave the car on the road. There’s good swimming and snorkelling here, as well as rock pools at low tide and the beach is never crowded. You can also access next door Leggan Cove across the foreshore at low water, a similar but smaller and more sheltered beach.
Bosahan Cove

This is a real gem but quite tricky to access, so it’s not for everyone. Almost hidden on the southern banks of the Helford River, this idyllic sand and shingle cove is surrounded by thick woodland and is a fantastic spot to swim or sunbathe, often without another soul in sight. To get there either cut through the gardens of the Bosahan estate (summer months only, admission charges apply), bring a small boat or walk about a mile along the coast path from Helford Village. No amenities due to its location, dogs allowed all year round.

A pretty fishing village with a large sandy beach ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and popular with windsurfers and sailors. The pretty harbour has a few cafes, shops and toilets and the beach is easily accessible from a small car park on the edge of the village . Dogs welcome all year.

Grebe Beach

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.
This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.
