I tried to copy a dvd and during the read portion the software came up with read errors. It told me to download the latest version of DVD Copy. So I went to the website, downloaded the software and tried to install it. I got an error saying it couldn't finish the install because of an existing file. Do I need to uninstall the older version first and then install the new version?

No, you needn't uninstall the old version.

The issue happened because you didn't close the old version. Now, quit any window of the old version, then re-install the new version, you will be successful.
